Grammar Table at Letters Trellis

October 28, 2023

Letters Trellis is completing our fourth year at Winchester Farmers Market with a special addition to our offerings.  Ellen Jovin is a roaming grammarian who has opened her folding table in all 50 states to answer any grammar questions.  Her visit to Winchester will be scheduled at another date, but she has offered to respond to the grammar questions we collect at our tent today.

With an extensive knowledge of the guidebooks that establish the rules of writing and a generous dose of humor, Ellen dispels grammar anxiety and shares the current usage guidelines on any question presented. You can find Ellen’s responses on our website.  Leave your email address on our mailing list so we can notify you when her answers arrive, and when she will be visiting Letters Trellis in person.

In “Rebel with a Clause”, Ellen Jovin recalls countless conversations at her table, revealing the emotional response to language and its expression.  At Letters Trellis, centered in a setting of market vendors, we also note the reaction of our visitors. They range from the curious glance at this unusual offering to perhaps a lengthy exchange about the box of letters saved at home.  Those who linger to complete a letter emerge like a student who has just completed an assignment, more relaxed than before, and often grateful.

One of the sweet outcomes of receiving and reading a personal letter is the opportunity to hear someone’s voice as you read the words from their hand. In the same way that you speak differently to the various people in your life circle, your writing can reflect your relationship with your intended recipient.  You are the sole person who can relate thoughts and experiences you have previously shared with your reader.

Within the surrounding sounds, scents, and tastes of the market, you have an opportunity to relate your current world, like providing a picture. as you send a hand-transcribed “voice mail” to a loved one or friend. Your letter can mark the season and create a photo memory worth 1000 words.

We invite you to read more about Ellen in these resources and hope you will stop by to visit, submit a grammar question, and write a letter.
